Coins and notes

As with other dollars, Fijian dollars ($) are divided into 100 cents (c). Fiji coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 denominations. Banknotes are available in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. While there were 50c, $1 and $2 notes in the past, these have all been respectively replaced by coins of the same values.

Facts about the currency

  • The FJD has been the official Fijian currency since 1969, when it replaced the Fijian pound.
  • Fiji is the only country in the world where you’ll need to convert AUD to FJD. This destination’s money is as unique as its culture, with distinctive flora and fauna featured on colourful polymer banknotes.
  • From 2013 onwards, Fijian banknotes have been printed with depictions of native flora and fauna rather than portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. Some of the plants and animals featured aren’t found natively anywhere else in the world!
  • Fiji coins were originally made to match the relevant Australian coins. However, the designs and compositions have since varied.
  • Many businesses in Fiji happily accept US dollars – could be handy if you’ve got some leftover cash from a trip to the States!
  • Fiji’s economy is highly dependent on tourism. The county welcomes close to 800,000 international visitors every year.
